WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

MEETING AT HASTWELLS. Mrs Elliott presided over a good attendance of members at the meeting of the Institute which was held last Wednesday. Two delegates were appointed to attend the conference to be held at Eketahuna. A successful “bring and buy” stall was held in aid of the Lepers’ fund. The competitions for the month in senior and junior. classes resulted: — Fancy worked night dress, seniors, Mrs McKay 1, Miss Frederickson 2, Mrs Madsen 3. Juniors, Miss H. Madsen 1, Miss T. Madsen 2, and Miss K. Larsen 3. Mrs Elliott and Mrs Caseley were the judges. “Best flower in the garden,” Mrs Madsen 1, Mrs Burt 2 and Miss H. Madsen 3. A game conducted by Mrs McKay resulted: Mrs Ngatuere 1, Mrs Caseley and Mrs Madsen 2 aijd Miss H. Madsen and Miss O. Halliory 3. The hostesses were Miss K. Larsen and Miss O Kalberb. The singing of the National Anthem brought the meeting to a close. CARTERTON MEETING. The president, Miss O. Wolters, presided over a very good attendance at the monthly meeting of the Carterton Branch of the Women’s Institute on Thursday. Mesdames H. Meyrick and E. T. Beaven were appointed delegates to attend the half-yearly meeting of the BushWairarapa Federation to be held at Eketahuna on October 21. Mrs Trapp and Miss Wolters were appointed delegates to attend a formation meeting of the proposed Wairarapa Federation at Masterton on November 1. An invitation was received from the Martinborough Branch for any member so desiring to attend’ the birthday party of the branch on Thursday, November 3. Mr Truman, health officer, gave an address on “Hygiene and Sanitation.” He was accorded an attentive hearing and received a very hearty vote of thanks. The competition for the best jam jar of flowers resulted as follows: —Mrs A. Knutson, 1; Mrs J. McKenzie, 2; Mrs C. Savill, 3. Afternoon tea was dispensed and brought a very pleasant afternoon to a close.
