LAMBETH WALK

As soon as the orchestra in every cabaret and dance hall in Paris strikes up the first bars of the “Lambeth Walk” there is a cheer from all the tables, which are quickly deserted while everyone rushes to the dance floor to join in the merry shuffle. The French, who have difficulty with our “the” and pronounce “w” as “v”, call it the “Lambet Valk.” They put all their native vivacity into the dance, and shake their fingers at each other arid add a characteristic shrug of the shoulders. At the open-air Moulin de la Galette, one of Montmatre’s most delightful dance halls and cabarets, the band conductor said: “We could play that dance all'night, and then they would not be satisfied.”

The first known portrait of Dickens, a miniature painting by his aunt, has been given to the Dickens house in London. The export of Canadian cattle to Great Britain has increased this year from under 5000 to over 24,000.
