CARTERTON

MOTOR CAR ACCIDENT. (“Times-Age" Special.) Sometime last evening, probably after midnight a very bad smash occurred to a practically new motor Hilman Minx 8 or 10 h.p. car. The car was being driven north and after passing the bend of the road before the Waihakeke Road was reached apparently got out of control for 35 to 40 yards, crashing into a concrete telegraph pole. The road shows signs of the brakes having been on the car very hard. The compact with the pole must have been considerable as the left hand side of the car is very extensively damaged. The car is a dark blue one and the number attached is 549. There is nothing to indicate to whom the car belongs, and the accident has not been reported either to the Carterton or Masterton police.. There were no signs of anyone having been hurt. The police have the matter in hand. Change of Business. The bld established cordial and aeriated business of Messrs G. A. Vincent and Co., of Featherston and Carterton, has changed hands, having been purchased by the Wairarapa Aerated Water Company, who took possession today. Personal. Miss Eva Chapman, of the Power Board staff, Carterton, who, two months ago left New Zealand for the Pacific Islands, returned to Carterton last Thursday. In conversation with the “Times-Age" representative, Miss Chapman said that she had had a wonderful time, and her two months’ trip was an eventful one throughout. Miss Chapman has benefited considerably in health by the sea voyage and change of air- j Mr D. J. McPherson, son of Mr and Mrs W. McPherson, Carterton, who, has been for some time with the Pensions Department, Wellington, has been transferred to a similar position at Palmerston North. He will take up his new duties as from Tuesday. Polling Day. Saturday was an ideal day, and in consequence, a fairly heavy poll was recorded at the Carterton booth. From 9 o’clock in the morning it was evident both sides were not leaving anything to chance, and when the booth was opened many cars were waiting with voters. From then onward till late in the afternoon, there was an almost continuous stream of cars to the booth. The number of votes recorded was 1935, which was 184 short of the 1935 election, when a three-cornered contest took place. The decrease in the number of votes on this occasion, can be accounted for'by the merging of part of the district into the Masterton electorate. Car Slightly Damaged. A car belonging to Mrs Budd, of Taumatu Island, was slightly damaged during the week-end as the result of coliding with a grader on the Waihakeke road.
