ATTEMPTED SUICIDE

EARLY MORNING EPISODE IN CHRISTCHURCH. YOUNG WOMAN SAVED BY BANK ( OFFICIAL. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Climbing a perpendiculai - ladder on the new electricity building at the corner of Manchester and Armagh streets, early on Sunday morning, a young woman made strenuous efforts to commit suicide by jumping from the fourth floor level, but was prevented by a young man, a bank official, who climbed after her and pinned her until assistance arrived. The girl was lowered to the street with a fireman's sling. This story was related in the Magistrate’s Court this morning by Sub-In-spector Packer, when a domestic, aged 27, was charged with attempted suicide. She pleaded guilty and was convicted and discharged, her name being suppressed by Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M. After attending a dance and later a private party, at which a considerable amount of liquor was consumed, SubInspector Packer stated, accused and three friends went to a cafe. Accused left and was followed later by her friends, who saw her climbing a ladder up the building. A bank official arrived and climbed the ladder, coming level with the girl at the fourth floor, where he pinned her, despite her struggles and kicks. An unhappy marriage was the initial cause of the episode, said Mr W. F. Tracy, who appeared for the accused. She had been living apart from her husband on 15s a week, supplied by him. Mr Tracy asked for another chance for accused.
