CARTERTON

ELECTION DAY. (“Timc-s-Ago” Special.) Today being election day the supporters of both candidates are very active in arranging for and transporting the electors to the pole. It is characteristic of New Zealand that their candidates “stand for Parliament,” but in America, candidates “run for Congress.” Almost a million people in New Zealand will help to make a decision as to whom shall comprise the Parliament to govern the Dominion. This year, with only a few constituencies having more than two candidates, a very true indication of the opinion of the people should be obtained. The staffs at the various polling botths are sworn to secrecy, and at most booths they will experience a very strenuous day. Particularly will this be sowhen numbers of electors exercise their right to vote by declaration, as various forms require to be filled in and signed by the applicant and witnessed by the D.R.O. before the voting paper can be issued. The same remark applies to visitors from other districts who claim the right to vote for their candidate in the' electorate from which they hail. Telegrams have to be despatched to the Returning Officer of the district concerned, advising that electors from his district have voted. The actual votes and signed application for voting papers are forwarded in separate envelopes, by first available mail. “Times-Age” Representative. Mr C. J. De Lacey has been appointed staff representative for the “TimesAge” in Carterton. Mr De Lacey, who will commence his new duties on Monday, is well-known to Carterton and district residents and will be responsible for local news, circulation and advertising. Church Jubilee. In readiness for ’the Presbyterian Church jubilee the church has been re-furnished and re-decorated with a very handsome blue carpet, with curtains and furnishings to tone. New lighting has also been installed, and those attending the special service on Sunday will fully appreciate the effects and improvements. Personal. • Mr and Mrs J. Candy have taken Mrs N. F. Hornsby’s house in Belvedere Street for a month.
