The current programme at the State Theatre will be shown finally tonight.

“THE SAINT IN NEW YORK.”

Rarely has Hollywood offered a hero who is both a public enemy and likeable, but this seeming paradox is surmounted in ingenious fashion in ’‘The Saint in New York” in which a campaign of killings is committeed exclusively on the persons of various gangster barons who need it. The result is a brand new -type of film entertainment. The picture will be shown on Friday night at the State Theatre. “The Saint” is a sauve, debonair crook with a sort of philanthropic code, who .has devoted his career mainly to ridding the world of those criminals who have no redeeming features, who are utter nuisances. When a civic leader finds the authorities unable to cope with the activities of a half dozen insolent racketeers he calls “The Saint” to his aid, gives him a list of Public Enemies and his blessing, and puts him to work. One by one “The Saint” goes after his victims with both the terrified survivors and the police arrayed against him, and falls in love with a mystery girl who is involved with the others. The picture is founded qn the celebrated book by Leslie Charteris and is indeed fine entertainment. Louis Hayward gives a brilliant performance as “The Saint.” Ray Sutton, in her lea-ing-lady debut as the mystery girl, scores heavily. Jonathan Hile, Sig Rumann, Paul Guilfoyle, Frederic Burton, Ben Weldon, Charles Halton and Jack Carson all have important roles. The first trailer experience of Mick ey Mouse, Donald Duck and the Gooi occurs in Walt Disney’s “Mickey’s Trailer,” a Technicolour cartoon, which will be shown tomorrow. Special sessions will be held on Saturday night at 7.30 o’clock and 10 o’clock. Election results will be screened at each session.
