PROPAGANDA
(To the Editor.) Sir, —After viewing the efforts of the various parties, and individuals in this direction I wonder if we are entitled to claim, that we, as a people, are the most educated nation of present times. If we are to be judged on the efforts of the propagandist, we have certainly reached a height, or depth, never before attained by any other group of people in this direction. That men and women should endeavour by suggestion, and direct accusation, to destroy the character and honesty of individuals, or parties, for the express purpose of obtaining power, or money, or both, is, in my opinion, the lowest thing that can happen. The more I see of humans the better I think of animals. The individual members of the different parties are not responsible, but forces, or groups, that are in the background. It is the leaders of the parties, or the supposed leaders that I blame, who should, if they are the leaders, have power to put a stop to this means of obtaining advantage. The master is responsible for the servant. Propaganda, is in my opinion a smoke screen, to hide the real issue and to confuse the people who are not able to think for themselves. The intelligent individuals are able to make their own decisions. Certain types of propaganda are at times necessary, and at times clever, but the methods used in the present campaign must certainly react on the parties responsible. -Whatever the results of the present election are, they must be due to the methods adopted. I am, etc, ARTHUR lORNS, Masterton, October 13. THE POSTMAN’S BURDEN. (To the Editor.) Sir, —Let me, through your columns, express my deepest sympathy with the victim of a fortnight of political propaganda, namely, the Postman. To him I would say: Unnecessary work well done. To the political candidates I would put this question: “How much longer will our homes be made the dumping ground for all the bunk and rubbish that can be printed?” Thanking you, I am, etc, NON-POLITICAL. Masterton, October 13.
