GREYTOWN

RETURNED SOLDIERS MEET. INCREASE IN MEMBERSHIP. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Wairarapa Returned Soldiers’ Association was held in the Fire Brigade Hall, Greytown, last night. Mr H. J. Brass (president) occupied the chair. Members of the general committee present were: Messrs R. Whyborn, A. G. Wallis, H. G. Alexander, A. E. Prentice (Masterton); N. H. Thomas, M. C. D. Mason (Martinborough); H. G. Carter, G. Robinson (Greytown); J. A. Halpin, A. Robbins, J. W. Fellingham (Featherston); C. A. Gray, A. T. Murray, C. A. Chennells (Carterton). The following members of the Greytown committee were also present: Miss Higginson, Messrs J. Herod, E. Graham, J. W. Barnard, W. Hutchings and R. Dyson. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs L. S. Nicol (treasurer), A. L. Bennett and W. J. White. The secretary presented the financial statement which showed a credit balance of £559 19s lOd. The secretary reported that the financial membership had passed the 500 mark, the total being 502 as against 387 for October last year. The district membership is:—Masterton, 266; Carterton, 95;' Greytown, 38; Featherston, 60; Martinborough, 43. It was stated that now the membership is over 500 the association is entitled to two delegates to the N.Z. Conference. The relief figures were down to 39, against 45 last month. Three new members were elected. A circular letter from the N.Z. Defence League was held over until the next meeting.

The proposed visit of the Diggers from Australia in 1940 was discussed, and, on the motion of Mr Alexander, it. was resolved to inform the Dominion Headquarters that the Wairarapa R.S.A. desired that a tour of the Wairarapa by the .Diggers be included in the entinerary and the local association is prepared to arrange transport and entertainment. All local branches are to commence a fund for the entertainment of the Australians. The next meeting of the committee is to be held at Martinborough in November. After the meeting the visitors were entertained to supper by the Greytown committee. League of Mothers. The Greytown League of Mothers held its annual Father’s Night in St. Luke’s Hall last night. The League choir rendered several glees-under the leadership of Mrs H. E. Webster, the pianist being Mrs H. G. Carter. Mesdames Webster, Graham, and Robinson contributed a trio. Songs. were sung by Mesdames Ingley and Webster. Mr Pryor, headmaster of the Martinborough School, gave a very helpful address on “Care of Children.” He referred to the mistaken policy, of some parents who instilled fear into their children, especially making then afraid of a policeman, the very person a child should respect and have confidence in. The speaker based his address on every day .happenings and urged a better understanding between parent and child. Mr Pryor was on the motion of Mrs Bull accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Thanks were accorded Mesdames Lohrey and Hay for preparing the hall and Mesda'mes Rees and Tully for the supper arrangements. The function was brought to a close with the singing of the League hymn and the National Anthem.
