BE BEAUTIFUL

DESPITE A COLD. SOME SENSIBLE HINTS. Spring is the time for colds, and the girl who has a cold and still wishes to be beautiful does not always find it an easy task. But, just as in everything else, there is a special technique of achieving beauty despite a cold. When you have a cold, it is remarkable how special events and parties will persist in taking place. You do not wish to miss the festivities, but you appear so bedraggled and washed out that you simply do not feel able to face the night. In other words, you 4 know that you are looking far from attractive. The following should help you to acquire beauty despite your cold. First collect your party clothes, lay them all out on the bed so that they will be handy, and then into the bathroom you go. You feel like a hot bath? Well, do not have it. That would only open the pores and make you worse. A cold bath? No. That would creat over-stimulation, and would also make you worse. Steer a safe middle course, and take a sponge bath. The water should be lukewarm, and the bathroom should also be warm, so that you will not catch a chill. After the sponge, give your body a brisk rub down with toilet cologne. This will make you both smell and fell refreshed. Careful Camouflage. Then gargle your throat and , bathe your eyes. They are most, .likely red and sore-looking, and a bath with weak boracic will soon make them white and sparkling. Now into your underclothes, which should be warm, and then beautify your face. Naturally it is pale, underneath the eyes are puffy, and the nose is red. There is only one way in which you can camouflage this, and that is to bury your skin beneath your make-up. Forget for once that you have a skin, and try to acquire a new one. And this is how you can do it. Take a small dab of your usual foundation cream in to the palm of your hand, add some of your face powder, mix them well together, smooth over your face as thickly as possible, pat it into the skin, and then remove the surplus with cotton-wool or tissue. A New Skin. This thick application serves three purposes. First, your skin, being very dry, needs nourishment. Second, the skin being dry, the powder will not stay on unless it has help. Third, you must completely cover your own pale, and perhaps blotchy, skin. Pink' and dark powders are the best, as they will most effectively cover up a white skin. A good plan is to make two cream pastes, one with a deep pink powder which is used on the cheeks, and the other with a paler shade of powder, which can be used to finish off the rest of the face.

And then, just to make you feel cheerful and happy, use a very brilliant lipstick. There is still your hair. There is nothing so bad as a cold for making the hair bedraggled and lank. Naturally, you cannot wash it. But here is something which you can do. Dip the bristles of your brush in a little brilliantine, then fasten an old piece of clean silk over the bristles, and brush your hair. The silk will pick up and carry away the dirt, and will allow the brilliantine to spread so thinly that, instead of the hair being oily, it will become naturally glossy. Then push and pin it into waves, and your grooming will be complete. A good beauty hint to remember is that, no matter how cold the morning may be, you must never use very hot water to wash your face. Instead, sponge the face with tepid water, dry thoroughly, and then massage the skin with a little vanishing cream. And please avoid those scorch-marks which are caused through sitting too close to the fire, and which will persist in showing through your stockings. In fact sitting too close to the fire should always be avoided. Talking about fires —many simple colds are caused by this fireside cosiness. Always avoid extreme changes from warmth to cold, and if you have been sitting on top of the fire and then have to go out of doors, always make sure that you stand in the entrance lobby for just a few minutes so that your body will gradually become colder. Then you can step outside and face the elements. This simple precaution will save you from many a cold, and also save your beauty.
