MARTINBOROUGH
BOWLING SEASON OPENED. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Carterton Bowling Club was represented by two rinks at Martinborough on Saturday when the official opening of the bowling green for play for the 1938-39 season took place. The president, Mr Pike, welcomed everyone and declared the green opened amid enthusiasm. Mrs Pike, wife of the president, threw the jack and played the first bowl. Mr Frank W. Smith, president of the Wairarapa Bowling Centre said a few words and forecasted a happy bowling season for Wairarapa. Players were present from all the sister clubs, and the following games were played. Greytown—Burns, Nightingale, Curtis, McLeod (s) beat Martinborough — Lamb, Pryor, Caseley, Jolly (s), 26/14. Martinborough—Bing, Mann, Yates, Boyd (s) beat Carterton —Kilmister, Harrington, Harris, R. Thompson (s), 20/15. Martinborough—Smith, Knell, Green, Pike (s) beat Park —Barr. Dagg, Jenkins, Shearer (s), 24/19. Featherston —Murray, McNamara, J. Higgison, Smith (s) beat Martinb'orough—A. Smith, MacGregor,- Larsen, Williams (s), 31/8. Carterton — Callender, Underhill, Tucker, Barber (s) beat Martinborough—Mills, Thompson, Hunter, Jones (s), 20/14.
At the conclusion of play the president of the centre, Mr Smith, thanked the ladies for their hospitality and for the very excellent afternoon tea provided. Three hearty cheers were given. Golf Club. A fourball bogey handicap played on Saturday resulted as follows: —J. D. McDougall and H. F. Harvey, 7 up; J. Martin and J. Pike, 4 up; D. R. Matheson and L. Chapman, 4 up. In the final of the senior championship H. F. Harvey beat W. G. Martin 2 up. D. R. Matheson and R. H. Lawrence will play the final of the junior championship during the week, the match to be over 36 holes. The C grade championship was won by M. C. D. Mason, who defeated W. G. Cuthbert 6 and 5. Next Saturday a mixed foursome will be played, after which the prizes won during the season will be presented by the club's president, Mrs W. J. Martin. The course will be closed for play after October IG. Personal. Mr and Mrs P. Hayman are spending a short holiday at Eskdale, Napier. Tennis Club. At the annual meeting of the Martinborough Tennis Club the following officers were elected for 1938-39: —President. Mrs W. J. Martin; vice-presi-dents. Mesdames F. McLeod, John Martin, G. Pain, W. Coleman, H. L. Griffiths, N. Mason, D. Cameron, A. D. McLeod. H. Blundell, W. B. Martin, F. P. Ward, G. L. Sievers, H. Ronalds. Messrs W. J. Martin, D. Cameron and E. B. Evans; secretary and treasurer, Mr Pat Ward; auditors. Messrs J. Jolly and N. Mason; management committee, Messrs J. Martin, C. Ward, G. McLeod, E. Evans, O. Grant, G. Simpson and N. Mason; lady in charge of tea arrangements. Miss M. Ward. The official opening day was fixed for October 29, wet or fine.
