AGREEMENT REACHED
IN AUSTRALIAN COAL STRIKE WORK TO BE RESUMED NEXT WEEK. DETAILS OF SETTLEMENT. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received This Day, 11.20 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. A basis of settlement of the coal strike was unanimously agreed to by representatives of all the unions involved at a conference with the Minister of Labour and Industry, Mr Mair. The General President of the Miners’ Federation, Mr Nelson, said that if the pits were ready, work probably would be resumed next Monday or Tuesday. Mr Mair communicated the terms of the formula last night to representatives of the owners, whom he will meet this afternoon. The terms, which will be submitted to members of the unions for ratification, are: — (1) That the hearing of the commission of inquiry into health and safety in mines shall be concluded as quickly as possible. (2) That the question of an amendment of the Compensation Act. with particular reference to coal problems, will be expedited. (3) That consideration of the most suitable form of pensions shall immediately be taken up by the Commission with representatives of the combined unions in New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria and Tasmania.
