TOUR OF FRANCE
EXPERIENCE FOR TRADESMEN. Until recent years, every stonemason and carpenter, after serving his apprenticeship, made a journey through the chief towns of France to gain experience. An inspiration of this old custom, a new prize has just been founded to enable young artists, painters, sculptors and architects, to make a two months’ journey through France to learn its beauties and to study its monuments and its art. The original idea of the new prize, however, is that it will be a collective one, and that the winners, a painter, a sculptor, and an architect, must travel together for two months and afterward produce a common work of art. It has been pointed out by the organisers that in olden times art was always a combination of these three, and the new prize will be an attempt to revive this collaboration.
