STOKEHOLD DEMANDS
PORT MELBOURNE DELAYED AT LYTTELTON DESERTERS TAKEN ABOARD UNDER ESCORT (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH. This Day. After walking off the Port Melbourne as a protest yesteday, six men of the stokehold complement were later arrested and conveyed under escort by launch to the vessel where she was lying at anchor off Camp Bay. When the ship was ready to leave yesterday morning, two of the stokehold crew were missing and the crew was not prepared to sail unless two other men were engaged. Although tw6 New Zealanders were signed on to replace the deserters, the firemen still refused to sail and it was then that six men walked off. The Port Melbourne proceeded down harbour and anchored off Camp Bay, and it was only when the men were placed on board there that the vessel was able to sail for Monte Video. The launch contained six constables as well as the deserters. After the original two had deserted, the men were informed that as the vessel was over-manned previously, two extra men were not required, but the crew persisted with their demand, and it was then that two new men were signed on.
