WHY BENES RESIGNED
FINAL DEMAND FROM ARMY PROPOSAL TO JOIN FASCISTS. “ONLY HOPE OF PRESERVING NATION.” LONDON, October 6. The Prague correspondent of the “Daily Telegraph” says that it is understood that the final demand for the resignation of Dr. Benes came from the army, which has apparently decided that the only hope of preserving the Czech nation in the future is to abandon the western democracies and join the Fascists. ’ The Prague correspondent of “The Times” says that an important development has followed Dr. Benes’s resignation in the formation of a new Slovak Front, comprising the People’s Party, the Agrarians and the Slovak Nationals, uniting 80 per cent of the Slovaks. The aims of the new body will be no interference with the Poles and Hungarians, and co-operation with the Czechs and Ruthenians. A new Federal State and a central Parliament, with Bohemian, Slovakian and Wenceslan Diets, is also envisioned. The formation of a Slovak Legion is officially denied in Vienna.
