VISIT TO AUSTRIA

DR GRAHAM COWIE FAVOURABLY IMPRESSED. Favourable impressions of the people of Austria were obtained by Dr Graham Cowie when he visited that country some time prior to the Nazi occupation. He found the people there to be of a good stamp and those he spoke to —mostly doctors and including a good many Jews —did not seem to be very keen" on the Nazis. He had a most enjoyable time in the country, though his visit was in the winter and he found it very cold. On his return journey he negotiated a 6000 foot pass in an eight horse-power car, which was considered quite a good performance for that time of the year. The road was kept open by snow-ploughs. He passed through portion of Germany via Cologne on his way to and from Austria and it was rather significant, he said, that a specially high-class road ended abruptly at the Austrian border. The Germans he met were very polite and pleasant people.
