ELECTION DAY
PROVISION FOR HALF HOLIDAY REQUIREMENTS OF THE LAW According to the provisions of the law, a half-holiday must be observed by shops on election day, but factories are not obliged to close, though every employee must be allowed reasonable time, not exceeding an hour, in which to vote. As polling is taking place this year on a Saturday, and as a five-day week operates in many industries, there will be a minimum disturbance of ordinary working conditions. Licensed premises, however, will be required to close at noon. In districts with Saturday late night, the late night may be observed on the Friday. In the case of those shops which are not required to observe the statutory- closing day, the assistants must be given their half-holiday on polling day, but assistants in hotels and retaurants may be employed on the afternoon of election. Shop assistants employed in selling confectionery or cakes in a combined business or a restaurant must, however. be given a half-day off.
