AN ALLEGED ABSENCE
HON R. SEMPLE REPLIES TO CRITIC. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WANGANUI, October 4. Mr C. J. Duggan, Labour candidate for Patea, speaking at Kai Iwi, referred to Mr H. G. Dickie’s statement at Hawera regarding me Hon R. Semple being absent from the House touring the country while the Public Works Estimates were being discussed, and that members had no opportunity to question him. Mr Duggan read a statement from Mr Semple stating that the position had been misrepresented. He was in the House all day when the Estimates were being discussed. The Estimates were not finished at 5.30 p.m. and the House continued, and he had previously arranged to transact public business in the South Island. He left by steamer that night. He remained in the House till 6.45 p.m. and arranged with the Deputy-Leader to handle the remainder of the Estimates. Mr Dickie, Mr Semple said, had endeavoured to create the impression that he was not in the House at all.
