MORMON CHURCH
ANNUAL CONFERENCE. HELD IN GLADSTONE HALL. The members of the Church of Jesus Cnrist (Latter-day Saints), better known as the Mormons, held their annual District Conference in the Gladstone Hall on October 1 and 2. President Mathew Cowley, with his wife from Auckland, presided over the conference, with Moni Tourau and his two counsellors as conductors. Commencing on Saturday evening a very enjoyable programme was carried out during the two days. The Primary Association and Mutual Improvement Association opened the proceedings. The Sunday gatherings commenced at 8.30 a.m. with a priesthood meeting, at which were discussed matters concerning the welfare of the district. At 11 a.m. Sunday School was held, and at 2 p.m. the general conference was opened with speakers from Hawke’s Bay. Mr Robinson, the local Cubmaster, and President Cowley, giving instructions to those present. The meeting on Sunday night brought the conference to a close, the priesthood and Relief Society combining in this connection. The theme throughout the conference was upon the "Word of Wisdom” —the effect of liquor, tobacco, tea and coffee on the human body. After tne last meeting numbers of those present left for their homes. Among those who attended the function were: Mr Robinson, Mrs Dodds, school mistress of Gladstone, Miss Hodges, district nurse, Mr T. Mason (Hawke’s Bay), S. Meha, Mr and Mrs No- 1 pira and Mrs P. Duncan.
