CHAIN LETTER
ALLEGATION BY LABOUR CANDIDATE. CHALLENGE To”nATIONALISTS. A challenge to Mr J. H. Irving, National candidate for the Masterton seat and the executive of the Masterton branch of the National Party to deny that copies of a “beastly, vile” chain letter were typed in the Masterton office of a member of the executive, was made by Mr J. Robertson, Labour candidate, in the Opera House last night. Mr Robertson said copies of the letter were being circulated in Masterton in an endeavour to raise a sectarian issue and prejudice people against the Labour Party. He would ask Mr Irving and members of the executive of the National Party to repudiate the facts. Such tactics were degrading to the ethical standards of a political contest. STATEMENT BY MR IRVING. NO KNOWLEDGE OF I,ETTER. In a statement made this morning. Mr Irving said: “I desire to inform the electors that I entirely disassociate myself from the allegations made by Mr Robertson. I further deny all knowledge and responsibility for the issue of any copies of the letter in question, 'he contents of which I strongly disapprove.”
