BREEDING OF MILITARY MAID
(By “The Cynic.”)
Military Maid, winner of the Juvenile Handicap at Marton is bred on sound lines and is a brown filly by Captain Bunsby from Afterglow 11, by Sunstar from Marie Legraye by Diamond Jubilee from White Lilac, by Springfield. Military Maid is thus a half-sister to The Dimmer, winner of the Sydney Cup, and Epilogue, winner of the V.R.C. St Leger. Afterglow 11, with Military Maid as a foal, was sold, at the Westmere Stud dispersal sale for 140 guineas to Messrs G. A. Lang and G. B. Walton, who race Military Maid. She died in 1937.
Right Again. Dictate, who has had an easy time since the Grand National meeting, was sent five furlongs at Riccarton on Tuesday with Financiere, the pair racing abreast throughout in good time.
Dictate is due to have his next racing at Trentham. It was hoped he would have had a preliminary at the South Canterbury fixture, but its postponement will mean that he will not have a race before Trentham. His owner, Mr M. O’Brien, will leave Wellington tomorrow for Sydney and Melbourne, and hopes to return in time for the Wellington meeting. The Royal Stable. Five yearlings, three of them fillies, have been selected to carry the King’s colours next season. The fillies include Great Truth, a daughter of Bahram and Frankly, and Judica, a bay filly by Easton out of Judith, dam of Jubilee and Cosmopolitan. The colts to go into training are Helios, by Hyperion from Foxy Gal, and Voyager, by Qplpmbo from Polish Air. Three other yearlings bred by his Majesty, including colts by Loaningdale and Orpen, will probably be sold at auction. A further success to the Royal Stud was credited by the Beckhampton filly Carouse in the Byrkley Maiden Plate at Derby on August 31. The daughter of Mr Jinks was bought from the Hampton Court Stud for 500 guineas. She runs in the name of Harry Cottrill, and is trained by F. Darling. Cosmopolitan gave a good account of himself in the chief race of the day, the Champion Breeders’ Foal Plate. Producing a brilliant burst of speed, the son of Sir Cosmo shaped like a winner for a long way, and eventually took third honours. Although not one of the competitors who made a stir in the betting, Cosmopolitan looked well on parade, and it will be disappointing if he does not do further good service for Egerton House.
Bahram. , Great things were prophesied for Bahram at the stud, and, in respect of prices, he has certainly made a Wonderful start. Some of the first of his yearlings were sold at Doncaster recently, and the 13,000gns paid for his colt out of Scottish Union’s dam, Trustful, was a remarkable price for a youngster by a horse who is an unknpwn quantity as a sire. Bahram commenced at the stud in England at a fee of 500gns, the only other horse to do so in that country being Splario.
Crojick, Melbourne critics are enthusiastic about the threeryegr-old CdJt Crojick and think he might be another Wotan. Crojick is by the same mare, Siegfried, and is out of Top Flier. He has been given plenty of time, having only one race as a two-year-old, and that as late as July, 'which he won, and his form this season so far has raised high hopes. Crpjick’s dam, Top Flier, was bred in Australia, and is by Top Gallant from Skylike, by Skyrocket. She was owned by the late Mr F. J. Nathan, who bred Crojick.
For Piinedin. Density, who is to race at Wingatui, gglloped half a mile in 50 4-ssec, at Riccgrton the other day, and Good Passage beat Keen Sight in 53sec. Keen Sight, who was intended to race in the Dunedin Guineas, will not make the trip, and his absence will leave the way clear for G. Humphries to ride Defaulter. Nightdress, picked up by Aymon at the half-mile, ran five furlongs in lmin 3 l-ssec, the last three furlongs in 39 l-ssec. Dictate and Palmyra had a similar task in lmin 4 l-ssec, the last three in 39 4-ssec. The former will not be included in today’s acceptance for the New Zealand Cup. Alby and Contract ran five furlongs in lmin ssec, the last four in 51sec. Both are to contest the high-weight at Kurow tomorrow.
Sparkle and Colonel Rouge finished abreast after covering six furlongs in lmin 17 l-ssec, the last four' in 52sec. This pair will be taken to Wingatui by E. Scoullar. Financiere and Kilrobe recorded similar time, taking 53 l-ssec for the last four.
Dranoel, a four-year-old by Robespierre from Rose of Orange, trained by D. J. O’Connor for M. L. W. Storry, showed further improving form by galloping five furlongs with Romarin in lmin 4 2-ssec, the last four in 50 2-ssec. Romarin is to have her next race at Rangiora on Labour Day. Great Flight and Harwich galloped seven furlongs in lmin 33 2-ssec, and Rousseau and Gillie took lmin 34 2-5 sec.
Waitaka had useful work over a mile in Imin 47 l-ssec, after taking 50 l-ssec for the first half, and Willie Win followed in lmin 49sec, the second half in 53 3-ssec. Willie Win will be ridden in the New Zealand Cup by C. G. Goulsbro.
Six Furlong Gallops. The Masquerader ran six furlongs in lmin 18 3-ssec, and Kinnoull was held in restraint over the same distance. Sovereign Lady and Disdain were to have galloped together, but the former broke away, and ran six furlongs on her own in lmin 16 4-ssec. Disdain followed at three-quarter pace.
To Be Mated. Razzle Dazzle and Gold Light, two great mares in their day, are to be mated with Woodend. Both are well up in years, and have failed to breed in recent seasons, and they will be turned out with the Lemberg horse.
Wynwood Destroyed. While being exercised at Invercargill recently Wynwood broke a bone in his fetlock joint and had to be destroyed. He was being ridden by his trainer, J. Gray, at the time, and was only doing three-quarter pace work. It was bad luck, as he was in first-class order for immediate engagements, having won in his last two starts at the Otago Hunt meeting. He was troubled with unsoundness earlier in his career in the same joint.
