SOCIAL SECURITY ACT
POSITION OF FRIENDLY SOCIETIES CONCERN IN AUCKLAND (By Telegraph —Press Association.) AUCKLAND, October 2. The opinion that the Social SecurityAct in its present form would have a detrimental effect upon the welfare of friendly societies, and that promises of members of the present Government were not sufficiently definite nor adequate to secure the societies’ existence was expressed in a resolution passed by members of the Star of Auckland Lodge, No. 26, of the Independent Order of Oddfellows.
The meeting also considered that steps should be taken, preferably before the election, to ascertain from responsible authorities the exact position of friendly societies after the Act came into operation, and to endeavour to secure more definite and adequate provision than tentative suggestions in order to ensure that societies would retain their present usefulness. It was stated on Saturday that the position of the friendly societies is likely to be considered by many lodges within the next few weeks, and the opinion was expressed by one official tfyat the' majority of members were perturbed at the future of various societies under the new insurance and health scheme.
