BRITISH MUSIC SOCIETY

MONTHLY GROUP EVENING. TALK BY MISS GAUDIN. The monthly group meeting of the Masterton branch of the British Mu- ' sic Society was held at the home of Mrs T. Jordan, Lansdowne, last night, the subject for the evening being “Scandinavian, Finnish and Hebridean Music.” Miss Grace Gaudin gave an interesting talk on the folk songs and famous composers of these countries. • She showed how the northern art music, up to the beginning of last century was based on the great German school, but with the advent of such men as Gade the Dane, Grieg the Norwegian and Sibeluis the Finn, they began to be conscious of the musical possibilities of their own folk songs. Miss Gaudin also spoke of Mrs Kennedy-Fraser’s work in the collection and editing of the beautiful haunting melodies of the Hebridean Islands. The talk was illustrated by members of the Singing Circle and other members of the Society who presented the following programme:—Norwegian song, “Fatherland’s Psalm” (Grieg); Finnish melody,/‘The Watcher,” pianoforte, Miss Stubbings; Swedish folksongs, “What I Have Promised,” “In SumrrAr,” “Little Karin,” “Flowers of Joy,” Singing Circle; Hebridean songs, “O Can Ye Sew Cushions,” trio; two songs, Miss Gaudin? Norwegian songs, “The Nightingale,” “I Love Thee” (Grieg); Danish songs, Miss Jamieson, pianoforte, Mrs Hessey.
