UNEMPLOYMENT
4 OBSERVATIONS BY NATIONAL CANDIDATE. MR IRVING AT MAURICEVILLE WEST. There was an attendanee of 33 electors at the Mauriceville West Hall last evening at a meeting addressed by Mr J. H. Irving. National Party candidate for the Masterton seat. Mr A. Forsberg presided. Mr Irving dealt with the Labour Party’s policy and pointed out where it had failed. He made special reference to unemployment. Mr Nash had stated that every able-bodied man would be in work in six months of Labour taking office, whereas, according to the Hon. H. T. Armstrong’s own figures, on August 9, 1938, there were 35,796 men on full-time work, paid from the unemployment funds. The position today, said Mr Irving, was relatively this: Registered unemployed, 2154; on sustenance, 8000; paid from unemployment funds, 35,796; total, 45,950. On the motion of Mr W. H. Bird, a vote of thanks and confidence in Mr Irving was carried unanimously.
