POWERS OF ARREST
GRANT TO TRAFFIC INSPECTORS FAVOURED BY SOUTH ISLAND MOTOR UNION (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The suggestion that powers of arrest be granted to traffic inspectors provided they were properly trained was approved by the South Island Motor Union at its conference today. Commenting on the North Island Union’s objection to power being given to inspectors to arrest intoxicated drivers, a delegate pointed out that the Government had only to make the inspectors special constables to give them powers cf arrest. An inspector had power to forbid a motorist to drive, and could remove a car to a police station. Mr A. Grayson said the North Island. Motor Union had no sympathy with the drunken motorist, but wanted to preserve the liberty of the motoring public. A sober driver might be in danger of accusation by an unqualified inspector, as had happened in Auckland. ,
