CANADA’S POLICY
BOUND TO SUPPORT BRITAIN IN WAR DECLARATION AT VETERANS’ CONFERENCE. TALK OF NEUTRALITY CALLED NONSENSE. (Received This Day, 11.15 a.m.) WINNIPEG. September 22. Canada could not remain neutral with Britain at war, the LieutenantGovernor, Mr W. J. Tupper, told the convention of the Army and Navy Veterans of Canada. “No real Canadian believes such nonsense,” Mr Tupper said. “Constitutional authority is all against it.” Lieutenant-Colonel Webb asserted that their only regret was that at a time when Australia, New Zealand and South Africa have assured Mr Chamberlain of theiV support, Canada has not spoken. A Montreal message says the “Star” editorially suggests that Canada authorise Mr Chamberlain to offer Herr Hitler Canadian wheat on long-term credits as a peace move, but not a bushel without a peace assurance.
