MAGISTRATE’S COURT

MONTHLY CARTERTON SITTING. POLICE AND CIVIL CASES. (“Times-Age” Special.) Mr. H. P. Lawry, S.M., presided at the monthly sitting of the Carterton Magistrate’s Court, held yesterday. Judgment for plaintiff by default was given in the following undefended civil claims:—Hill and Hughes v. W. B. Printz, claim £49, costs £1 4s 6d; Watson & Co. v. R. Salisbury, claim £l3 Ils, costs 9s; Ward’s Cash Stores v. John Walker, claim £2 9s 10s, costs £1 3s 6d; C. K. Goodin v. L. Marlin, claim £2 4s, costs £1 3s 6d; J. Miller v H. Goodin, claim £2, costs £1 3s 6d; J. Miller v. R. Thompson, claim £4, costs £1 5s 6d; Gordon Hughan, Ltd., v. R. E. Ralph, claim £1 2s, costs 8s; Wairarapa Power Board v. W. Flutey, claim £2 3s 9d, costs £1 3s 6d; L. Feist & Co., v. L. James, claim £2 Bs, costs 8s; A. J. Lindop and C. J. Fisher v. B. James, claim £6 15s, costs £1 Ils 6d. As the result of a visit paid by the police to the Taratahi Hotel on the night of August 19, the licensee, F. C. Yule, was charged with selling liquor after hours.

Senior-Sergeant G. A. Doggett said three men'were found in the private bar when the police arrived about 10.5 p.m. In entering a plea of guilty for his client, Mr C. C. Marsack said the men in question were friends of one of Yule’s barmen. Defendant had not had a conviction for fifteen years and was to be congratulated on the conscientious manner in which he conducted the hotel. People came knocking at the door at all times of night and he had the difficult task of sending them away. Mr. Lawry convicted and fined Yule £3 and 10s costs. The three men involved in the case, K. Reid, J. Milner and K. Leys, were convicted of being found on premises after hours and were fined 10s and 10s costs. For parking a motor car over a fire plug, F. B. Smith was fined 10s and 10s costs. W. L. Lawrence was fined £1 and 10s costs for having no warrant of fitness. For having no radio licences L. Price and W. B. Kruse were fined £1 and 10s costs and 5s and 10s costs respectively.
