PIRINOA

PERSONAL ITEMS. (“Times-Age” Special.) Mr D. S. Warren, who has been seriously ill, is now making satisfactory progress towards recovery. Mr Dean Detton, the well-known wrestler was among the visitors to this district during the weekend. Messrs M. Carter and R. Mitchell, who were visiting relatives in this district, have returned to Dannevirke. Mr Stan Thomas, who has been confined to his bed with an attack of measles, has now recovered. Mesdames Te Maari, Carter and Mr Waaka Enoka have been appointed De-puty-Returning officers for the Kohunui, Greytown and Pukio booths respectively, in connection with the Maori elections. Mr Percy Haligan had a miraculous escape from serious injury to his eye recently when a projecting manuka branch struck him in the eye which fortunately did not enter the organ. Lambing Percentages. Docking operations are in full swing in this district. Percentages are about on a par with those of last season, and in some cases more. Polling Booth not Required. Owing to the early election the polling booth for Maoris at Tuturimuri has been deleted from the list. This booth caters for the shearers on the coastal stations but as shearing operations do not commence until about the week after the election it was found unnecessary to open it Great interest is being evinced in politics in this district, and no doubt the meetings of the respective candidates will be largely attended. Te Ore Ore Meeting, Due to the boisterous weather on Sunday, there were no representatives present from the local tribe at Sir A. Ngata’s meeting at Te Ore Ore. However, the remarks made by Sir A. Ngata as outlined in the “Times-Age,” especially with reference to the administration of the Trust, are heartily endorsed by the Natives of this district. The proposal that facilities be made for Maori boys at the Wairarapa College meets with the approval of the local Natives. Road Improvement, It is more than likely that oiling operations on the uncompleted portion of the main highway to Pirinoa will be commenced shortly.
