TURF NEWS & NOTES

CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE & COURSE Views on Racing Facts and Fancies A TYPICAL NIGHTMARCH (By “The Cynic.”)

Gay Parade’s win on Saturday was the most pronounced seen on the course for a long time. He had given indications of soon opening his winning account by his recent work, but to beat a field as pointlessly as he did was not fully expected. He was bred by his owner, Mr F. T. Buchanan, of Rolleston, who raced the dam, Gay Sonnet with much success in all parts of the South Island. Gay Parade has not been asked to do much racing to date, and the patient policy adopted with him by his present trainer should allow him to reach much better class than that represented by Saturday’s field. A Massive Juvenile. Gold Salute, who filled second place in the John Grigg Stakes at Ashburton on Saturday, is one of the biggest two-year-olds seen out for some time. He is by Lord Warden from the Paper Money mare, Frenzied Finance, and like many of the Lord Warden breed will do better with age. Frenzied Finance has had a varied stud career. Her first production was Miladi, a good winner, and her next four foals died. She then threw Warden’s Gift, who has not raced to much extent, and Gold Salute was her next. Last year she had a dead foal to Nightmarch and this season she has been mated with Spear Dance. Promised Fulfilled.

Rayevdus and Jayola, who hot: scored on Saturday, were two of las season’s two-year-olds that showe much promise. Royevrus is by Sur veyor from Desert Fire, and it wi] be noticed that his name is Surveyo spelt backwards, while Jayola is b; Boy Jay and Lyrola. Good Two-Year-Old. Master Hotspur justified the goo< things that had been written abou I him by scoring a very decisive wh in the John Grigg Stakes, at Ashbur ton, in the smart time of 47 '3-ssec for the four furlongs. It is considerec that he will be the best of the two year-olds in the South Island, anc may'possibly finish up the best in th< I Dominion. Miss Bluff. ■ The three-year-old filly Miss Bluff who won at Ashburton, was got by Cockpit from Miss Camouflage by AU Red —Winter Rose, by Euroclydon— Primrose by Hilarious, who won the first C.J.C. Welcome Stakes. Not Himself. Nigger Boy, who Was expected to be a source of trouble to Master Hotspur on Saturday, was suffering from a cold, and he appeared very dull when par- . aded in the birdcage. He was the first to show out from the barrier, but was done .with a good way from home. He is a plain looking colt by Nigger Minstrel, but is no doubt the makings of a speedy galloper. Sign of Stamina. Brandon, who filled third place in the classic at Ashburton on Saturday, did not compare very favourably in the matter of size when paraded with his more upstanding rivals, but the manner in which he came from last place to beat Nigger Boy for third prize suggested that stamina makes up for what he lacks in build and looks. He stood still when the barrier lifted, and as he was well in the rear with two furlongs covered, he was practically forgotten, but he arrived late on the scene with a telling run, and was going on at the post. Brandon is a gelding by Royden from Bran Pie, by Buckwheat. Bran Pie is also the dam of Aggravate, who ran a fair race on Saturday.

Surprise Win. Te Monatekapa, the winner of the Kjngsland Hurdles at Avondale, is a young hurdler that has. shown promise in his schooling, but his win on Saturday was in the nature of a surprise, for prior to this race he had only started twice in 12 months. His only experience over the fences was at Matamata, in July, when he cones^e ®, er^a Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase, in which event he was going particularly well when he fell. .

High Priced Colt. Orelio, the Limond-Waterwings colt, who cost his owner 1000 guineas, was a hot order for the Avondale Stakes, but the best he could do was to finish third, three and a half lengths away. The winner, Anopheles, was responsible for a fine performance. The track was on the dead side and he covered the four furlongs in 49 2-ssec., which under the circumstances, must be considered particularly good. Recently he has been pleasing in his track work, and although he went out tenth in the order of favouritism his win in some quarters was not unexpected, and it is possible that he may go on with it. For Wingatui. The Chokebore stable has nominated Keen Sight, Harwich, Great Flight, and Winning Rival for the Dunedin' Jockey Club’s spring meeting, and they will race in the interests of the estate of Sir Charles Clifford. Winning Rival is to contest the McLean Stakes on the first day, and in the absence of Master Hotspur, who would have to carry a 101 b. penalty for his Saturday’s win, the Bulandshar filly should have bright prospects. Other Riccarton horses nominated for the meeting comprise: Chaste, Colonel Rouge, Master Dingle, Sparkle, Defaulter, Palmyra, Density and Kilrobe. Defaulter is in the Electric Handicap of six furlongs, on the first day, and will contest the Dunedin Guineas on the second day.

t After a Lengthy Spell. 1 D. P. Wilson has taken up Rifle - Range, who had been hacked about on 1 a farm in South Otago for over a year, r During his spell from the tracks Rifle j Range has built up well and resumes work in first-class condition. The same treatment is to be tried with the Philamor mare Bad News, a/id she was sent 1 out to the country this week, t . i Kinnoull. Kinnoull was a certainty beaten at . Ashburton. He got well away and was I nicely placed to the far turn, but then ■ drifted. He came wide in the straight • but just failed to beat Wine Card. Ponty would have been very dangerous if he had got away on even terms with the rest of the field and he and Kinnoull would have had the finish to themselves with a better run. Fit Horse. Iddo is a particularly fit horse at present, and he had no difficulty in winning the Paiaki Hurdles at Foxton. At his last start over hurdles, he was considered a certainty beaten. He put in such a beautiful jump at the first fence that he left his rider behind. He came out later in the day in the Mahoetahi Handicap and ran second to 1 Tidewaiter, who has now won four races in a row. Cheap. Jazz Boy followed up his good form at Wanganui by winning the Robinson Handicap. His owner has expressed his intention of disposing of all of his horses, so that Jazz Bay might prove a cheap horse for someone. *
