MEETING OF MASTERTON COUNCIL HALF OF Y.M.C.A. RATES REMITTED The Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, presided at the monthly meeting of the Masterton Borough Council, held last night. Others present were: Councillors. Trevor Beetham, J. Ninnes, G. W. Morice, A. T. Jackson, H. E. Gardner, R. Russell, G. D. Welch, W. Kemp, W. H. Judd and A. D. Low. Councilor W. White was granted leave of absence. The Masterton Cycling Club was granted permission to use the Park Oval for training purposes on the same conditions as last year. It was decided to open the playing areas at the Park on October 15, and to close them on March 31, both dates being subsei ct to the discretion of the custodian. The First Masterton Company of the Girls’ Life Brigade was given permission. to sell flowers in the street and residential areas on September 24. The schedule as submitted by the buildings caretaker bringing his hours of work within the scope of the Caretakers’ Award was adopted, and will take effect from October 1. The wages of an extra man for an additional day per week are to be made retrospective to the last meeting of the council. The Borough Engineer submitted a special report regarding asphalting round the playing apparatus in the Park at an estimated cost of £2O 18s. The report was adopted and is to be given effect to. The Masterton Savage Club wrote inviting three members of the council to a Korero to be held next Saturday night. ' , ~ ’ Councillor Kemp: “I think we should send three of the real saints of the council, if there are any on the council. n Mr Jordan: “You should be the best judge of that.” . It was decided to write thanking the club for its invitation and advising that the council would be represented by Councillors Kemp, Gardner and Morice. On the recommendation of the Gas and Abattoir Committee it was decided to circularise all defaulting gas consumers notifying them that unless their accounts were paid within seven days the meters would be removed. The chairman of the committee, Councillor Low, said the' trouble was that in the past they had spoon-fed their gas consumers too much. 1 In reply to a request from the Wairarapa P. and A. Society, it was decided to invite the business people of Masterton to close from 11 a.m. on October 27. People’s Day of the Carterton Show. A letter from a ratepayer regarding the consideration of the roadway and footpath in Alexandra Street was referred to the Borough Engineer. It was decided to advise twenty-five petitioners, who objected to the new saleyards being built in Colombo Road, that the council had looked into the matter, and had no objection to the work being done. Mr Jordan said new saleyards were not going to be built, but the present ones were being extended and brought to within about 100 yards of the Riverside Golf Link pavilion. In the opinion of the Works Committee, the proposal would not increase the nuisance. Councillor Gardner asked that his vote be recorded against the motion. The Masterton Horticultural Society was given permission to hang a streamer across Queen Street today, on November 23, and on March 6, 1939. The action of the Mayor in instructing the Town Clerk to place £9OOO on fixed deposit for three months was apdecided to advise the Soldiers’ Club that in view of the altered conditions of the club the council was unable to make any remission of rates for the current year. “If we should remit any rates 1 say we should remit those of the Y.M.C.A., but we are not here to give away any rates,” stated Councillor Gardner when asking that his vote be recorded against a decision to remit 50 per cen. of the rates owing by the Masterton Y.M.C.A. . a . It was decided to write off tne ra.eo on the Hospital Board’s property in Dixon Street, now leased by the council for a Ladies’ Rest Room. From August 1 to March 31 next the rates amounted to £l7 0s lid.
