CARTERTON

ELECTION POLLING BOOTHS. (“Times-Age” Special.) Owing to the fact that the Masterton electorate now takes in the area on the TJaratahi plain, also Carrington, Belvedere, to the western side of a length of Lincoln Road, Carterton, where the saleyards are situated, special arrangements will this election, be necessary to make provision for the electors in the immediate vicinity of Carterton to record their votes for the Masterton electorate. The question of arranging a suitable polling booth (or booths) is, of course, the responsibility of the Returning Officer for Masterton. The Belvedere Hall, which was about 2 miles from Carterton, was sold for removal some years ago, but the Belvedere School a little further on will provide a suitable building for a polling booth. At Carrington there is a ’school (now unused) and further north the Taratahi West School can be pressed into service if so desired. For some years there has always been a polling booth at the Freezing Works. A decision may be made to also have a polling booth at Clareville where the Social Hall or the school could be used very conveniently. Motor Car Blown Over. Some employees of the Waingawa Freezing Works when returning from work to their homes in Carterton caught the full force of the recent violent gale, the result being that the sedan car in which they were travelling was blown over. It was necessary for the vehicle to be towed to Carterton after the mishap. Carterton Library. At the monthly meeting of the Carterton Public Library, the chairman, Mr W. Vaughan, presided, there being also present—Messrs Clark Hall, McPherson and the Rev. H. White. The librarian, Mrs Adair, also attended. Apologies for absence were received from Miss Wolters and Messrs Leete, Balfour and Copeland. The librarian reported that subscribers numbered 126. Reference was made to the improved appearance of the lending library room due to the re-arrangement of the furniture and the altered display of the books. It was decided to continue to offer old books for sale until the end of the month, and then give the balance left to the W.D.F.TJ. and the hospitals. Discussion on the proposed juvenile section of the library was left over till next meeting. Personal. The friends of Mr A. F. Stubbs will regret to learn that it has been necessary to him to enter the Croydon Hospital for treatment. Labour Party Dance. The King’s Theatre was the scene of a most enjoyable dance on Monday evening when the local branch of the Labour Party held a successful dance, over 200 couples being present.
