TIDEWAITER’S FINE PERFORMANCE
(By “The Cynic.”)
The Avondale Cup winner, Tidewaiter, who was secured by C. W. Boyd, his owner-trainer, for £7O, has now won four races in succession, and, as he has just emerged from hack ranks, his effort was exceptional. He had only three or four horses behind him when he began his run, and he hung on like a real stayer. Encouraging. An attempt is being made to convert Race Boy into a hurdler, and the gelding was given his initial lesson over obstacles earlier in the week. He shaped most encouragingly and his future displays will attract plenty of interest. Scottish Union. • By winning this year’s St. Leger, Scottish Union scored where his sire, Cameronian, failed badly in Doncaster’s classic race of 1931. Cameronian had won the Two Thousand Guineas and Derby in such convincing style that he was considered likely to have his name included with' the select list of winners of “the triple crown.” He ruled a firm favourite for the St. Leger, but he proved a complete disappointment and saw all the field home. Scottish Union ran second to Pasch in the Two Thousand Guineas, and in the Derby he filled a similar position to Bois Roussel. Demand for Fillies. Fillies are consistently more highly valued in England than in any other country. At the first July sales at Newmarket most of the high prices were paid for fillies. The highest price for the two days of the sale was paid for a chestnut filly by unbeaten TaiYang, out of Versicle, by Sickle (leading sire in America) out of the good, mare Verdict. The filly was bought by Mr Peter Beatty, who bought the Derby winner, Bois Roussel, after he had won one race in France and also Foxglove, who has since won two important races in England and appears to be one of the best stayers. Foxglove is by Foxlaw. The price was 3100gns. for the Tai-Yang filly. From the National Stud a bay filly by Fairway out of' Daurnont was bought by Frank Butters for 3000gns. R. J. Colling paid 2800gns. for a brown filly by Easton (second to Windsor Lad in the Derby) out of Sword Play. For the Stud. Before his departure for Sydney last week, Mr W. Higgins made arrangements for the Paper Money mare Passbook, the dam of Deficit and Dissipation, to be mated with Beau Pere this season. Passbook is being shipped to Sydney this week. Sight Draft, another of Mr Higgins’s mares, is being sent to Defoe. American Champion Passes. Equipose, one of the most notable of American racehorses of recent years, and one of the great stake winners of the world, died recently in the United States at Mr C. V. Whitney's stud farm at Lexington, in Kentucky. Equipose, who was raced by Mr Whitney a few years ago, won 29 races, was placed in 14 others, and earned in stakes, £67,720. Sun Beau won £75,350. Equipose held the mile record for the United States, as he ran the distance at Arlington Park as a four-year-old in June, 1932, in Imin. 34 2-ssecs., carrying 9.2, so it was a notable performance. He was out at a period when
good horses were plentiful, as he had among his opponents Twenty Grand, Mate, and Jamestown, and he more than held his own against them. Equipose was by Pennant (son of Petei - Pan) from Swinging, by Broomstick from Balancoire 11, by Meddler from Ballantrae, by Ayrshire. Ballantrae being the winner of the Cambridgeshire in England in 1902. Ballantrae was also the dam of Mediant, who won the Stewards’ Cup at Goodwood in 1909. Equipose was standing at a fee of 1500 dollars, and his first progeny will race next year. May Win Soon. Corroboree is reported from Awapuni to be an improved horse this season who may win some of the bigger prizes later on. At Trentham. Royal Star 11, a chestnut gelding by Vesington Star brought out from Eng- , land by Mr W. Higgins last year, has joined up with H, Telford’s team at ; Trentham. i l New Colours. 1 Mr O. Disley, who formerly raced Rona Bay but transferred the colours ' when his lease of the mare expired, 1 has now leased the four-year-old ' Arausio —Chemise mare Quimper, and he has registered new colours as royal < blue and red sleeves. In Good Order. Balinvar and British Nation, who ; have done a good deal of road work, ' are due to make their reappearance i at the Ohinemuri Meeting. The pair i are stated to be in good order. s Good Speed. Cone Peak, who raced as a member I of A. E. Didham’s team last season, is ] now under the care of G. McLean at ‘ Riverton. The Weathervane mare has ; a good turn of speed, but her lack of ' inches is a handicap. f On Easy List. < Gay Hunting is on the easy list at present owing to having torn off a ] shoe while working. The hoof be- t came inflamed and it is still in a poul- f tice. The check will probably keep I the gelding off the scene for some 1 Weeks. \ 1 \ ] Additions. 1 Two addition to R. Penman’s team at Trentham are the four-year-old mare Dancing Flame (Lackham — Atruda), who has recently come in after a spell, and Pharisee, an unraced three-year-old bay gelding by Rabbi out of the Kilboy mare Phantasy, the dam also of Cloudy Bay. Pharisee is of the Artic King stamp. Sent Home. As the result of his disappointing showings as a hurdler at Wanganui Jewish Lad has been put out of work, 1 and it is probable that he will be ; sent home to his owner at Blenheim for a spell. His form at Wanganui was < nothing like what he is capable of pro- 1 ducing. : Nice Colt. j Duckling, sister to Admiral Drake j and Francis Drake, has a very nice brown colt by Phaleron Bay at Grange , Stud, Westmere. This colt is a half- j brother to Lady Drake (by Beau Pere), • the two-year-old filly now in training, and owned by the president of the , Wellington Racing Club, Mr E. L. Rid- ( diford.
