GIFT OF LAND

TWO VALUABLE BLOCKS GIVEN TO MASTERTON LANSDOWNE AREAS TOTALLING 118 ACRES. ANNOUNCEMENT BY THE MAYOR. The unconditional offer of 118 acres of land in two blocks at Lansdowne to the Masterton Borough Council is announced by the Mayor, Mr T. Jordan. The offer has been made by the family of the late Mr and Mrs Thomas Coldham Williams, early settlers of the district, through the Trustees, 'Messrs Hugh Williams and Guy Williams. The land included in the offer comprises two valuable blocks. Both areas are in the borough and they are separated by the Masterton Golf Links. One section, of 34J- acres, occupies a plateau commanding a magnificent view of the Tararua Ranges, on the western side of the Golf Links and has a chain frontage to Opaki Road and about 15 chains frontage to an unformed portion of the Golf Links road. The other section. 83J acres in area, comprises a compact block, mostly flat, at the foot of the Golf Links hill and having a frontage io Gordon Street of about 25 chains. “I wish to express my keen appreciation of the munificent gift made by the family of the late Mr and Mrs T. C. Williams to the public.” said Mr Jordan, “and I feel sure the public will equally appreciate the generosity which has been shown. In the years to come the property will prove a very valuable addition to the amenities of this town and district. It will be seen,” Mr Jordan added, “that the offer is quite unconditional, so that it will be for the council and the public to formulate a scheme or schemes for the use and development of these two areas. The donors very thoughtfully left the gift quite open for development, and the council and its successors will not be hampered in the meantime. The land will offer an ample scheme for development by thoughtful citizens.”

Mr Jordan stated that the offer would be placed before the Borough Council at its meeting tonight.
