GREYTOWN

DIAMOND JUBILEE BALL. AN OUTSTANDING SUCCESS. (“Times-Age” Special.) The diamond jubilee ball of the Greytown Football Club took place in the Town Hall last evening and proved an outstanding success. Visitors from all parts of the Wairarapa and Wellington were present. The hall was tastefully decorated with the club’s colours (red, yellow and black) and looked very effective. On the stage were two decorated goal posts; on one was the date “1878” and on the other “1938.” The music was supplied by Te Tau’s orchestra and Messrs W. Stringfellow and R. Brunton were capable M’s.C. After supper Mr J. F. Thompson presented the trophies won during the past season. The Dennes Rose Bowl was awarded to W. Stringfellow and S. Brunton, being the most valuable players to the club on and off the field. The Vance Cup, for the best junior player, was awarded to W. Barge. The Heapy Cup, for the best third grade player, went to W. Field. In a happy speech Mr J. F. Thompson traced the history of the club. He paid a tribute to the old pioneers of Greytown who formed the second oldest club in New Zealand. The ladies’ committee made a special feature of the jubilee supper. The committee consisted of Mesdames Johnson, O. Peterson, A. G. Peterson, F. Best, Pickard, J. Thompson, Stunell, Vance, F. Brooks, Kilgour, Miss N. Bouzaid. Today the diamond jubilee football match between Greytown and Athletic is being played. The Athletic Club was the first Wellington Club to visit the Wairarapa in the early days. Tonight the dinner and smoke concert will complete the celebrations of a splendid 60 years of football. Death of Mr T. O’Donnell.
