A westerly gale with gusts reaching a maximum velocity of 58 miles an hour did much damage in the city and country today. Roofs were lifted from many houses in the suburbs and trees blown out by their roots. Yachts were washed ashore and wrecked. Fences were destroyed and great havoc was caused in orchards. Airline services were disorganised. There is a terrific sea raging in Bass Strait where 12 ships were forced to seek shelter.
