Miss Peggy Perry is at present a patient in Glenwood Hospital. Mr J. L. Griffiths, ex-All Black footfall captain, is being transferred to Hastings instead of Wanganui. The death occurred on Thursday at Eketahuna of Mrs Janet Farmer, wife of Mr G. A. Farmer, at the age of 61 years. Lieutenant J. H. Dunn, officer commanding the 22nd Anti-Aircraft Battery, Wellington, has been appointed captain, the appointment taking effect from June 1, 1938.
A cablegram from Suva reports that the new Governor of Fiji, Sir Harry Luke, landed yesterday from the Niagara. He was sworn in as Governor of Fiji and High Commissioner for the Western Pacific.'
Mr P. G., Stevens, of the staff of the Feilding Agricultural High School, has received notice of his appointment to the staff of Lincoln College,-Christ-church. For the past 10 years Mr Stevens has been instructor in agriculture at Feilding.
At last night’s meeting of the Masterton A. and P. Association votes of condolence were passed with the relatives of the late Messrs W. G. Beard, J. G. McDonald and C. Kebbell and with Mr S. Clarke in the death of his mother and Mr J. Jameson in the loss of his sister.
The Minister of Defence, the Hon F. Jones, announced yesterday that the following candidates had been approved for enrolment in the Civil Reserve of Pilots, and their training had been commenced with the Wairarapa and Ruahine Aero Club: —T. E. Denbee, J. H. Hamill, R. W. Prout, H. C. George, W. R. Jaspers. By an extraordinary/ coincidence, the two surviving passengers of the Philip Laing, which arrived at Port Chalmers on April 15, 1848, died within a day of each other. Mrs M. Stewart, Wellington, died on August 30, and advice was received in Dunedin yesterday of the death in Sydney on August 29 of Mrs J. L. Soutter, at the age of 93 years. At Dunedin yesterday a special committee appointed by the professorial board selected Messrs R. H. Wade and N. V. Farrell as Otago nominees for Rhodes scholarships. Mr Wade, who is aged 22, was born in Balclutha and educated at Waitaki Boys’ High School and Otago University, where he graduated B.A. after a distinguished athletic and academic career. Mr Farrell, a native of Dunedin, was educated at Otago Boys’ High School and Otago University. He graduated B.A. and also has had a distinguished academic career. He is a cricket blue, is president of the University Dramatic Society and a member of the golf club and the badminton team.
