BIG SHIPMENT TO SOUTH AMERICA ANTICIPATION OF FURTHER EXPORT (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. When the steamer Port Melbourne berths at Lyttelton on September 23. she will load about three thousand tons of Canterbury potatoes for South America. The shipment was arranged by the Director of Internal Marketing (Mi- Picot), who last week visited Christchurch and South Canterbury Ho complete arrangements. Farmers are being paid £3 a ton, sacks in. Most of the shipment comes from Ellesmere, Darfield, Rangiora and Ashburton, and it comprises Red Dakotas, as white potatoes are considered unsuitable fo,r South America. Already six hundred tons have been shipped to South America this season. The surplus of good quality table potatoes in the province is estimated at about eight thousand tons. Arrangements will probably be made for further shipments.
