NEARING AN END
BUSY DAY IN THE HOUSE * OF REPRESENTATIVES CENTENNIAL CELEBRATIONS. CHECK ON SHEEP STEALING. WELLINGTON, This Day. Six Government Bills, seven local Bills, and one private Bill were put through all stages and passed by the House of Representatives yesterday. Part of the afternoon was occupied in discussing Ministerial answers to members’ questions. Consideration was then given to local Bills until the tea adjournment. These included the Wellington City Housing Bill, which empowers the city council to make loans on second mortgage for the building of houses and to combine with financial institutions in granting advances for housing purposes. Two Bills were brough down by Governor-General’s Message at the commencement of the evening sitting. These were a Samoa Amendment Bill, which makes minor changes in the law governing the administration of the mandated territory of Western Samoa, and the New Zealand Centennial Bill, which gives legal status to the organisaticii already set up to organise the centennial celebrations in 1940. It also defines the functions of the National Centennial Committee.
Urgency was taken in the evening’ for the passage of the Stock Amendment Bill, the Stallions Bill, the Education Amendment Bill, the Native Housing Bill, the Local Legislation Bill, and the Reserves and Other Lands Disposal Bill. The Stock Amendment Bill, which places restrictions on the removal of stock with a view to checking sheep stealing, met - with general approval. The Minister of Agriculture, the Hon W. Lee Martin, explained that the Bill had been introduced largely at the request of farmers’ organisations. In moving the second reading of the Education, the Hon P. Fraser, commended the voluntary efforts of organisations and individuals interested in adult education.
The present indications are that the session will finish tomorrow. The Supplementary Estimates will be brought down today, and the only other Bill to be introduced is the Appropriation Bill.
