KING IN LONDON
RETURN FROM SCOTLAND "IN VIEW OF POLITICAL SITUATION.” MINISTERS CONFERRING. LONDON, September 14. In view of the political situation, the King is returning from Scotland tonight. Twenty-three Ministers were present at a Cabinet meeting which is expected to continue all day. A crowd of 2000 packed Downing Street.
HOPES IN BRITAIN ANTICIPATION OF PEACEFUL SOLUTION. IN VIEW OF PREPONDERANCE OF DEMOCRACIES. (Recd This Day, 9.55 a.m.) LONDON, September 14. The Australian Associated Press says the gravity of the crisis is indicated in the King’s decision to cut short his Scottish holiday and return to London to discuss the situation with his Ministers. Cabinet met for two and a half hours, during which time, Mr Joseph Kennedy, American Ambassador, called at Number 10 and spoke to Mr Chamberlain. It is understood that Cabinet has drawn up a Note ready to send to Herr Hitler as a last resort, but it is still hoped that the preponderant power of democracies will compel Germany to accept a peaceful solution. The Soviet and France are pressing Britain for a firm joint declaration, warnina Berlin, but it is understood that Cabinet still believes that this might provoke the very situation which it is desired to avoid. The French military, air and naval attaches conferred at Whitehall. It is officially denied that the French war chiefs are coming to London for consultation. The acting-Japanese Ambassador called at the Foreign Office and expressed Japan’s solidarity with the Germans. The British United Press correspondent at Eger states that Herr Kundt said: “It seems to us that the only solution is for England and France immediately to draw up a reasonable nlan of collaboration with Herr Hitler and compel President Benes to accept it.” LABOUR IN BRITAIN. MEETING OF THE PARTY EXECUTIVES. (Recd This Day, 10 a.m.) LONDON, September 14. The National Labour Executive members have decided that the full executives of the Labour Parliamentary Party will meet tomorrow morning, to discuss the international situation.
