CLASHES & DEATHS
COULD BE STOPPED EASILY BY SUDETENS. POINTED COMMENT IN LONDON. (British Official Wireless.) (Recd This Day, 10.58 a.m.) RUGBY, September 14. The evening newspapers print the latest news despatches from Central Europe, but no clear indication is to be derived from these often-conflicting reports on whether or not conciliation will prevail. Regret at the turn which events have taken since Herr Hitler’s speech, and a desire to see the situation restored so that negotiations can proceed, are common to all evening newspaper comment, which in these respects undoubtedly reflects the feeling in official quarters. The “Standard” and “Star” both point out that there is no reason why the clashes and resulting deaths in Cbechoslovokia should lead to war, since in view of the iron discipline of the Sudeten Party such disturbances must have been sanctioned by the party, and can equally well be brought to an end by a*word from the same source.
