POSTMASTER RETIRING

COMPLETION OF FORTY YEARS’ SERVICE. Mr J. D. O’Connor, postmaster at Masterton since October, 1937, will retire on superannuation at the end of this month, on the completion of forty years’ service with the P. and T. Department. Mr O'Connor, whose future movements are indefinite, will probably remain in Master ton for some time. Born at Dunedin, Mr O’Connor joined the Post and Telegraph Department there in 1898, and three years later entered the telegraph school of instruction at Invercargill. He was promoted to telegraph cadet in his home town, where he remained as a telegraphist until he was transferred to Wellington in 1913. During three years overseas with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, Mr O’Connor was signalmaster at the New Zealand Division’s headquarters. He was the last man to hold that position in Germany when the New Zealand Division was attached to the army of occupation. On his return to New Zealand in 1919 he was promoted to the position of telegraph supervisor at Ashburton. Later he was postmaster successively at Rakaia, Levin and Dannevirke. At Levin and Dannevirke he wps a member of the Chamber of Commerce. In October, 1937, Mr O’Connor took up duty in Masterton as postmaster. Womens Liis
