EBRO BATTLE
HUGE NUMBER OF BOMBS DROPPED RELATIVELY LITTLE DAMAGE TO BRIDGES ITALIAN REINFORCEMENTS STILL ARRIVING By Telegraph—Press Association. Copyright. < LONDON, September 13. The “Daily Telegraph’s” Barcelona correspondent says that during the seven weeks of the Ebro battle rebel bombers dropped 300,000 bombs over a 30-mile valley in the hope of wrecking Government bridges. Loyalist officers say that the average of hits damaging bridges was only one bomb in 3000. The bridges are more numerous now than in peacetime. Deserters from General Franco’s forces are stated to be enlarging upon the discontent among the rebels because they are always thrown first into the line of battle, while the Italians remain in reserve, prepared to rush into action and monopolise the glory if the Spaniards pierce the lines of the loyalists.
Italian reinforcements continue to arrive. It is officially announced that 264 Italian and 116 German aeroplanes were shot down during the campaign.
