“Beggarly” Allowance.

Strong protests about the amount of war veterans’ allowances, provided in the new Finance Bill, were made by members of the executive of the Christchurch Returned Soldiers’ Association yesterday. After a long discussion in which such terms as “scabbily treated” and “beggarly allowance” were freely used, the meeting finally decided unanimously to make instant representations to Dominion headquarters asking that the Government be again approached this week and urged to make the new allowances coincide with the amount recommended by the association.

Meat Board Publicity. Eastbourne, a well-known seaside resort on the South Coast of England, was the centre chosen by the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board for its final English publicity campaign of the season. The Eastbourne meat retailers joined in the campaign effectively, 35 entries being received for the window-display competition, which was utilised particularly ’ to demonstrate New Zealand’s distinctive brand. The prize-giving ceermony was attended by 70 members of the trade. Two of the retailers at this meeting bore testimony to the great assistance they received from the board s officers in pushing the sales of New Zealand lamb, and all retailers present appeared to be appreciative of the board's efforts.
