HARRIER ACTIVITIES

WAIRARAPA CHAMPIONSHIP. W. MCDONALD’S FINE RACE. In the 10-mile district championship on Saturday running over a heavy greasy course that embraced all types of, harried country, W. McDonald who was in the lead for most of the race, came home strongly to beat his team mate, W. Burgess, by 8 seconds. He was followed 12 seconds later by G. Gregory, of the Masterton Club, who was followed home in turn by the holder of the title, R. Shaw. The trail which started from the Park gates made straight up on the bitumen to Faulknor's Bowser Station and on to the Ruamahanga Bridge. From the bridge a break was made over the paddocks to the top of the old avenue which was followed back to Te Ore Ore Road. This was followed for about 50 yards when a trail led across the grass paddocks and ploughed fields until the Bideford Road was . reached. From here the trail led up Mr G. Shaw’s Avenue, around his residence to come down again on to the Bideford Road. Here the same trail was followed back to the Park gates where the finishing tapes were. W. McDonald, the winner, thoroughly deserved his win and he takes the Wairarapa SubCentres certificate for the 10-mile district championship for 1938. Last year’s winner, R. Shaw, lost the Wadham Cup for the first Masterton Harrier Club man home, it going to G. Gregory who finished in third place.
