GREYTOWN
FIRE BRIGADE MEETING ELECTION OF SUPERINTENDENT (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Greytown Volunteer Fire Brigade was held on Monday night, when Superintendent W. Gates presided over a full attendance of members. A vote of sympathy was passed to the relatives of the late Mr D. P. Loasby, and Mr John Hodge, both of whom had been honorary members of the Brigade for many years. Invitations were received from the Upper Hutt and Petone Brigades at attend Reunions. Accounts passed for payment totalled £3 5s 6d. It was reported that the membership of the Brigade was now eighteen. Messrs G. Rhodes, R. Eaton and N. Heapy have been appointed on the usual three months’ probation. Firemen Heapy and Eaton were elected for station duty. The action of the secretary in purchasing lino for floors was confirmed, and it was decided to cover meeting room also. Superintendent W. Gates who is leaving Greytown was granted three months leave of absence from September 30. On the motion of secretary Carter, seconded by foreman J. Workman, Deputy Superintendent J. Wood was unanimously elected acting Superintendent, this being subject to the approval of the Borough Council. A vote of thanks was accorded to the Carterton Brigade for fixing couplings on the new hose. The committee reported that arrangements were well in hand for the annual ball. Personal Items. Mr T. Groube is at present an inmate of the Greytown Hospital. The many friends of Mrs A. W. Horton (mayoress) will be pleased to know that she was able to return to her home yesterday after having been several weeks in the Greytown Hospital. Mr G. Haigh has found it necessary to enter the Greytown Hospital for an operation. Mr H. Walden has returned from a holiday spent at Island Bay.
