A BASELINE DUEL

MAKO DEFEATS PUNCEC AMERICAN’S BRILLIANT PLACEMENTS U.S.A. TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS By Telegraph—Press Association. Copyright. (Recd This Day, 9.55 a.m.) NEW YORK, September 12. Results in the American lawn tennis singles championships included the men’s, wherein Mako (U.S.A.) beat Ptincec, 6/2, 6/4, 9/7. Mako was content mostly to remain on the baseline and await Puncec’s errors. Mako went to the net occasionally, and made a number of brilliant placements and kills, but it was mostly a baseline duel. Gilbert Hunt beat Riggs 6/2, 0/6, 9/7, 0/6, 6/4. Hunt’s victory over Riggs provided the biggest upset so far. Hunt was grimly determined and played a strictly forcing game. In the women’s Miss Wynne (Australia) beat Pederson, 8/6, 3/6, 6/1; Madame Mathieu beat Miss Wheeler, 5/4, 6/1. Miss D. Bundy beat Mrs Hopman 6/4, 6/1.

The match between Misses Wynne and Pedersen was somewhat ragged, neither player showing her best form but the severity of the Australian’s strokes clearly demonstrated her supremacy and gave her complete control of the situation, except in the second set, in which she seemed to lost touch entirely.
