Mr and Mrs E. G. Norman, of Cole Street, Masterton, who at present are in England, are expected to leave in about a week’s time on their return voyage to New Zealand. Mr and Mrs P. Hawksworth, Colombo Road, returned to Masterton on Saturday. After competing with distinction at the New Zealand badminton championships at Hamilton they spent a week’s holiday at Rotorua. The friends of Mrs J. Davie will regret to learn that she has been taken ill and is now a patient in the Masterton Hospital. The Rev J. Davie is at present returning from a visit to Australia. Sympathetic reference to the death of 'two old supporters of the club, Messrs F. Hood and W. L. Wrigley, was made by the president, Mr H. H. Mawley, at the annual meeting of the Masterton-Opaki Rifle Club on Saturday night. The death has occurred of Mrs Maria Goldie, at her residence,' Pitt Street, Auckland. Mrs Goldie, who was 93 years of age, was the widow of Mr David Goldie, a former mayor of Auckland and member of the House of Representatives, who died about 11 years ago. She was the only daughter of the late Mr Charles Frederick Partington. There was a large attendance of district settlers at the funeral yesterday afternoon of the late Mrs G. H. Clarke, formerly a well-known resident of Kopu&ranga. A targe number of wreaths testified to the esteem in which Mrs Clarke was held. The officiating clergyman was the Rev E. J. Rich, and the pall-bearers were sons and grandsons of Mrs Clarke. The death has occurred of Mr George Celestine St George, of Parnell, at the age of 74, states a Press Association telegram from Auckland. Mr St George, who was the youngest son of the late Dr and Mrs St George, New Plymouth, was well known throughout the Dominion and in several of the major islands in the Pacific as an official in the Bank of New Zealand. At various times he was manager of the Bank of New Zealand branches in Levuka and Fiji, and later in New Zealand. The funeral of the late Mrs P. G. Rose, which took place in Masterton on Saturday afternoon, was largely attended. Many beautiful wreaths were sent by sympathisers, including one from the Masterton Master Builders’ Association. The Rev E. J. Rich conducted a service at the chapel of Hyde’s Funeral Service and also officiated at the graveside. The pallbearers were Messrs E. Jenkins, W. Judd, K. Andrews, W. Betty, R. H. Lewis and W. Sealey. Appreciation of the valuable help given to the Government by Group Captain the Hon R. A. Cochrane, chief of the air staff, who will soon return to England, was voiced in an interview at Christchurch by the Minister of Public Works, the Hon R. Semple. The Minister said Group Captain Cochrane’s advice, particularly in the development of the Government’s plans for the establishment of an adequate system of aerodromes and landing grounds throughout the country, had been of the greatest assistance. Group Captain Cochrane’s extended term of service expires early in 1939 and an announcement is expected shortly about his successor.
The death occurred at Timaru yesterday of Mr C. E. Graham, an exofficer of the Colonial Bank of New Zealand and the Bank of New Zealand, who had charge of various branches of those banks in the South Island. He was born 71 years ago at Ben Lomond Station, in the Upper Waitaki district, and was the eldest son of the late Mr and Mrs C. C. Graham.
