WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

MEETING AT OPAKI. (“Times-Age” Special.) Mrs Buick presided over a very good attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the Opaki Women’s Institute. The “Golden Thread” was given by Mrs Malmo who spoke about her trip to Queenstown. Her talk was much appreciated. A demonstration on stool-making was given by Mrs Donald, members taking a keen interest in every detail. The competitions for the month were won as follow: —Best vase of flowers: Mrs Beetham, 1; Mrs Rayner, 2; Mrs Miller, 3. Work or creton apron: Mrs Adcock, 1; Miss Wyeth, 2; Mrs Beetham, 3. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs Wingate and Mrs Malmo. EKETAHUNA GATHERING. At the monthly meeting of the Eketahuna Women’s Institute Mrs Carter presided over an attendance of" about thirty members. Mrs Carter expressed her pleasure at being present once more and welcomed a new member, Mrs Tolley. Arrangements were made for an exhibition of members’ work at the St. Peter’s flower show in Pahiatua. Last year Eketahuna was the winner of 16 cups. A touching letter was received desscribing conditions at Makogal Leper Settlement and asking for assistance. It was decided to take up a collection next month. Miss C. Wilson and helpers gave a most interesting demonstration of painting on wood. The long table was covered with bowls apd boxes of different shades, most of them decorated with brightly coloured designs of native flowers and leaves. Miss Wilson was accorded a very warm vote of thanks for her explanation of this interesting craft. Two competitions were held and resulted:—Best collection of six spring bulbs, Mrs Wilson 1, Mrs Albrechtsen 2. Mrs Albrechtsen and Mrs Oliver tie for 3. Best small posy, Mrs Baucke 1, Mrs Oliver 2, Mrs Baucke and Mrs Oliver tie for 3.
