HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

GARDEN COMPETITIONS. The Masterton Horticultural Society has always made a special effort to increase the interest of local residents in their gardens. One of the chief objects of the society is to assist and encourage home gardeners in the borough of Masterton in improving the quality of their gardens. With this end in view, garden competitions are sponsored by the society. The competitions are open to all gardens, except those registered as nurseries or occupied by professional gardeners. All entries must be made on the prescribed form obtainable from the society, >and must be returned to the secretary not later than Thursday, October 20. A small entry fee is charged. The entries will be judged during the first weeks in November and February. No garden may be entered for more than one competition in any one year. Judging will be based on the points system, the maximum allocation of points being:—Design and harmony, 20; cultivation, 10; neatness, 10; lawns, 20; flowers, 10; fruit, 10; vegetables, 10; trees and shrubs, 10; total, 100. Protests must be lodged in writing within three days from the announcement of results, accompanied by a deposit of 10s. The competitions are: — No. 1. —Best garden not exceeding half-acre in size; no restrictions as to labour. Prizes: First 50s, second 30s, third 20s. (Donated by Mr P. Borthwick) . No. 2. —Best garden not exceeding quarter-acre in size, open only to those not employing professional gardeners. Prizes: First 50s, second 30s, third 20s. (Donated by Mr T. Jordan). Champion garden.—Owner of “best” garden (selected from entries in both competitions) will hold the Home Gardens Champion Trophy donated by Mr H. L. Esau, for the season 1938-39, and will receive one guinea’s worth of bulbs, donated by Mr C. L. Needham.
