CHARGES AGAINST HARRY BRIDGES Secretary for labour ATTACKED. THREAT OF IMPEACHMENT PROCEEDINGS. (Reed This Day, 9.25 a.m.) PORT ARTHUR (Texas), Sept. 9. Mr Dies asserted that the Secretary for Labour, Miss Frances Perkins, had failed to enforce the law by not deporting Bridges and said he planned to start impeachment proceedings against her unless she acted immediately. He alleged that her records showed that Bridges was a Communist and had "conspired in riots and terrorism and could be deported.” TAKING IT CALMLY. MISS PERKINS AWAITING COURT RULING. (Recd This Day, 9.25 a.m.) WASHINGTON, September 9. Miss Perkins did not comment on the impeachment statement and is not acting against Bridges before the decision on a similar Supreme Court case. President Roosevelt has not answered Mr Dies’s request for aid from Federal Departments in investigating "un-American activities.” A recent message from San Francisco stated that Harry Bridges, the C. 1.0. Labour leader, is on trial at Los Angeles on contempt of court charges arising from a dispute concerning the San Pedro longshoremen. He is accused of attempting to influence the judge’s decision by publishing a telegram he sent to the Secretary of Labour, Miss Perkins, allegedly threatening a longshoremen’s strike if the decision were adverse, also of verbally threaisning to call a strike.
