HOME BUDGETING

KEEP A DAILY RECORD. Budgeting is systematic spending or thinking in terms of values. The yearly income sets the tempo for the year’s expenditures. In planning the budget this annual sum should be distributed proportionally into months and then into weeks. A definite sum should be set aside for every item that enters into the radius of one’s home. Incidentals should not be overlooked, as. they do occur. No matter how high one aims to keep his standard of living, it should not be in excess of his income. Having decided upon a fixed budget, the next step is to put it into effect. The recording of household expenditures should be done with the same accuracy and faithfulness as that of a business corporation. It is possible to procure budget books for household expenses where every item is listed in proper order. However, the budget plan may be carried out successfully through the use of simple memorandum books. The main point is exactness in daily recording every expenditure and carefully listing each item under the proper heading. This discipline may seem difficult at first or even unnecessary; but when one grasps the importance of daily setting aside a definite time in which to do this work one will learn to appreciate the businesslike attitude it enables one to maintain towards home and income.
